AI Brings a Surprising Boost to Russia’s Agricultural Insurance Sector

Artificial Intelligence Cuts Crop Damage Assessment Time by More Than 50-Fold

Artificial intelligence is reshaping Russia’s agricultural insurance system, dramatically accelerating the process of verifying crop damage after natural disasters. According to Korney Bizhdov, president of the National Insurance Agency (NSA), the integration of AI has reduced loss assessment times by over 50 times, a breakthrough announced at the recent Insurance Market Leaders Forum.

Monitoring Fields from Space

The technology powers the AgroSmartAssistant platform, which uses satellite imagery and neural networks to automatically identify insured fields and detect signs of damage or stress. This AI-driven monitoring system allowed insurers to rapidly process data covering over one million hectares of farmland affected by frost in 2024.

The Digital Transformation of Agri-Insurance

The NSA is advancing a suite of digital tools — including mobile assessment apps, integrations with databases from the Ministry of Agriculture and Roshydromet, and online services offering agrometeorological data and consulting. These innovations make agricultural insurance faster, more transparent, and more accessible for farmers.

Experts say that digital transformation will be a key driver for the sector’s future growth. The combination of AI, space-based monitoring, and big data analytics not only streamlines the work of insurers but also ensures that farmers receive timely financial support, helping stabilize agriculture in the face of increasing climate risks.
