Hydrogen Instead of Natural Gas: Researchers’ Calculations Could Advance Power Generation Equipment

Researchers at Perm National Research Polytechnic University have developed a 3D model of a combustion chamber to identify the precise operating parameters needed to use hydrogen as a fuel.

Finding efficient, low-emission fuels is one of the key challenges facing the modern energy sector. Hydrogen is considered one of the most promising options because, when burned, it releases four times as much heat as methane and has virtually no harmful environmental impact. The challenge is that gas turbines cannot use hydrogen without modification: its combustion characteristics differ significantly from those of other fuels. In many cases, researchers fail to account for critical operating conditions in industrial gas turbines. As a result, engineers lack the data they need to make the necessary design changes to existing equipment.

Researchers at Perm Polytechnic moved beyond simplified laboratory models and developed a high-fidelity 3D model capable of reproducing the full range of processes, from airflow and fuel-air mixing to ignition. They configured the model with temperature, pressure, and fuel and air flow rates matching those of an operating gas turbine. By varying these parameters, the researchers were able to determine the conditions under which hydrogen combustion remains stable without damaging the equipment.

The findings matter not only to Russia’s energy sector but also to the global scientific community as it searches for alternatives to natural gas. For end users, switching to hydrogen as a fuel could bring a tangible improvement in environmental conditions.

From Simulation to Hardware: Where Modeling Meets Engineering

To validate the findings of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) team, the digital model must be tested against real equipment. The combustion chamber needs to be assessed for its ability to withstand vibration, thermal loads, and transient operating conditions. Existing burners, fuel supply systems, and several other components will then need to be adapted for hydrogen.

The Perm Polytechnic development could be of interest to both Russian and international gas turbine manufacturers. United Engine Corporation (UEC) already uses similar models in the digital twins of its turbines.

Four Years of Hydrogen Projects: From Burners to 3D Modeling

PNRPU’s development marks another stage in the broader research and engineering effort underway in Russia to introduce hydrogen fuel into the energy sector.

In 2022, researchers at Samara National Research University developed and tested Russia’s first hydrogen burner for gas turbine units. The burner can also operate on other fuels, making it suitable for both new turbine designs and upgrades to existing units. In 2025, UEC began testing a 32 MW gas compressor engine equipped with a dual-fuel hydrogen-methane burner.

A Step Forward in Design and Modernization

The 3D model developed by Perm researchers to study hydrogen combustion parameters under actual industrial gas turbine operating conditions represents a significant achievement for Russia’s engine-building and energy industries. If the results are validated under real-world conditions, engineers will gain a precise tool for designing new gas turbine units or upgrading existing ones without having to test every operating mode on live equipment.

More broadly, digital tools have become standard practice in power generation equipment engineering. They allow engineers to calculate the required parameters quickly and safely in a virtual environment before translating the results into physical hardware.

Economic factors also support the development of hydrogen technologies in Russia. Natural gas is relatively inexpensive here, and it accounts for 45% to 70% of hydrogen production costs. Electricity is also cheap in Russia. As a result, hydrogen technologies will still be more cost-effective in Russia than, for example, in Europe
