Russia to Build Digital Twin for Future Lunar Nuclear Power Plant

Russian scientists are set to develop a digital twin of a nuclear power plant planned for deployment on the Moon, a system designed to test operations in advance and reduce the risk of failures during construction.

Vladimir Koshlakov, CEO of the Keldysh Research Center, said the digital model will allow engineers to simulate the operation of all major systems before the facility is physically assembled on the lunar surface. According to him, the stage is critical because it allows specialists to test different operational scenarios in advance and avoid errors during installation.

“We need to arrive, install the system and be confident that it works. Without these kinds of digital approaches, that would be impossible,” Koshlakov said.

Russian officials say the lunar nuclear power plant is no longer viewed as a science-fiction project and could become reality within the next seven years. Vasily Marfin, head of NPO Lavochkina, previously said deploying the facility on the Moon would require three launches between 2033 and 2035. Preparatory work for the project will be carried out under the Kosmos (Space) national program and the Atom federal project.
