Rosatom Builds a Digital Ecosystem Around AI

Rosatom is implementing a comprehensive digital transformation program covering the entire lifecycle of nuclear power plants – from design and construction to decommissioning.

Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and domestically developed digital platforms occupy a central role in the program. The initiative is designed to improve efficiency, safety and technological autonomy across the nuclear sector.

For example, the use of neural networks has significantly accelerated complex engineering calculations. Tasks that previously required days or even weeks can now be completed within hours.

Automated systems are handling routine operations, freeing engineers to focus on higher-value analytical and creative work. That shift has been enabled by the integration of large-scale computing resources and specialized Russian software platforms.

Predictive Analytics Prevents Outages and Losses

One of the most important elements of Rosatom’s digital transformation strategy is the introduction of predictive analytics. Dedicated algorithms process massive volumes of equipment sensor data and provide early warnings about potential malfunctions.

That approach helps prevent unplanned reactor shutdowns, reduce financial losses and improve the operational reliability of nuclear power plants. According to industry experts, predictive maintenance systems can reduce forced downtime by as much as 30%.

Industry Platforms Form the Core of the Digital Ecosystem

Rosatom is actively developing its own digital platforms designed to manage all stages of the nuclear facility lifecycle more efficiently. One example is T-FLEX, a system for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). It integrates engineering and process documentation, production scheduling and logistics, providing transparency and operational control throughout all project stages.

Other important tools include Logos, which manages production flows and resources; REPEAT, which monitors the quality of manufactured components; and Atommind, which performs deep analysis of large datasets. All of these systems are integrated with one another and form a unified digital ecosystem supported by Rosatom’s own data processing centers.

Import Substitution and Technological Sovereignty

Rosatom’s digital transformation program is closely tied to the strategic goal of reducing dependence on foreign software and hardware solutions.

Products developed under the initiative fully comply with Russian information security standards and have received the required certifications. That ensures the reliability of critical systems even under sanctions-related restrictions.

According to Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, import substitution across key software categories within the nuclear industry has now reached 92%, while strategically important critical information infrastructure facilities have achieved 100%. Over the past five years, investments in these areas have exceeded 200 billion rubles ($2.5 billion).

Education and Workforce Development for the Digital Era

The transition to new technologies is impossible without qualified personnel. Demand for IT professionals in Russia’s nuclear sector over the next five years is estimated at between 5,000 and 7,000 professionals.

Rosatom is actively cooperating with specialized educational institutions through joint training programs and research projects. Significant attention is being devoted to training personnel to work with advanced digital tools, including virtual and augmented reality systems that allow employees to study equipment and operational procedures without direct physical interaction.

Results and Future Outlook

The first results of Rosatom’s digital transformation program have already been significant. The company is reporting higher labor productivity, lower production costs and improved safety and reliability indicators.

Under Rosatom’s plans, digital technologies are expected to account for 90% of all deployed solutions by 2030. That would further strengthen the corporation’s position as a global nuclear industry leader while creating a solid foundation for future technological development.

As at the beginning of the original nuclear project, our goal is not simply to replicate foreign analogues, but to create something of our own with new and superior characteristics. That gives us reason to expect our solutions to find demand not only in Russia, but also in international markets
