Russia Expands 4G Coverage with Low-Frequency LTE Boost

Russian telecom operator MegaFon has expanded its 4G network across Kirov Oblast, reaching deeper into rural areas without building new towers.

MegaFon, one of Russia’s leading telecom providers, has extended the reach of its 4G network in the Kirov region. The improvements result from infrastructure upgrades in several local districts, according to CNews.

By activating a low-frequency LTE layer, engineers managed to deliver a stable signal over distances of up to 10 kilometers. This enhancement was achieved using existing infrastructure and that eliminates the need to build new base stations. The signal’s increased penetration also improves mobile internet quality indoors and in remote rural communities.

Among the areas benefiting from the upgrade are Klimkovka—known for the scenic Manigor spring—and Savalay, home to an English-style park said to have once hosted writer Leo Tolstoy. Other locations include the town of Chernaya Kholunitsa and a nearby segment of the federal highway linking Kostroma, Sharya, Kirov, and Perm. The improvements mean better access to mobile services for drivers and passengers alike. Additional towns where the network was upgraded include Mokino, Rozhdestvenskoye, Stary Pinigery, and Shurma.

According to Alexander Maksimov, MegaFon’s regional director, the project demonstrates how modern technology can significantly improve coverage without building new infrastructure. Similar expansions are planned for other underserved areas in the future.
