Russia Expands Wi-Fi Calling to Improve Coverage in Remote and Enclosed Areas

With VoWiFi and VoLTE, Russian mobile operators are enabling calls in places where traditional networks can’t reach.

In various regions across Russia, telecom operators are using modern technologies to improve call accessibility—even in areas where mobile networks fail. That includes locations like basements, underground parking garages, tall buildings, thick-walled structures, and long-distance travel routes.

One key solution is Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), which allows users to make voice calls over wireless internet. The technology is now available not only in Moscow but also in other regions including Samara Oblast.

Another widely adopted service is Voice over LTE (VoLTE) which routes calls through 4G networks. VoLTE provides faster call setup times, clearer sound quality, and stronger, more stable signal performance—free of distortion or dropouts.

These innovations ensure that subscribers can stay connected even when standard cellular coverage isn’t available.
