Russian Scientists Develop AI-Driven Laser System for Throat Surgery

The medical complex is designed for laryngeal procedures and will adjust laser settings in real time.

Researchers in St. Petersburg are developing a laser surgical system for operations on the larynx that will be controlled in real time by artificial intelligence. The project aims to improve surgical precision and reduce risks for patients.

More Precise Surgery and Faster Recovery

The St. Petersburg Research Institute of Ear, Throat, Nose, and Speech has unveiled a hardware-and-software laser system for laryngeal surgery guided by neural networks. Its defining feature is the ability of AI algorithms to analyze tissue conditions during an operation and instantly select optimal laser parameters, including power, pulse duration, and wavelength.

According to the institute, AI-based monitoring of biological tissue allows surgeons to adapt quickly to non-standard conditions, fine-tune laser exposure, and reduce the risk of complications, Interfax reported. This approach is expected to make procedures less invasive and more effective, while significantly shortening recovery times for patients.

A Path Toward Digital Transformation in Laser Surgery

Researchers have already built and validated a computer model of laser-tissue interaction, trained neural networks on experimental data, and tested a working prototype. The system relies on domestically produced components and software.

Plans for deployment are already in place. Prototype units are scheduled to be manufactured in 2026, with the first surgeries using the new system planned for 2027.

The potential impact of the technology extends beyond otolaryngology. The system could be adapted for a range of procedures that rely on surgical lasers, opening the door to digital transformation within this area of surgery.
