AI Cuts Train Inspection Time in Russia From 40 Minutes to Just 5

Russian Railways is using artificial intelligence to spot defects, boost efficiency, and enhance safety across its network.

Russian Railways (RZD) has rolled out an AI-based inspection system that dramatically accelerates the process of checking train cars. What once took up to 40 minutes can now be completed in three to five minutes, thanks to automated analysis of video and audio data.

“Previously, inspectors manually recorded and reviewed footage to identify faults. Now, AI handles that work, reducing the time needed for each inspection severalfold,” said RZD’s head, Yevgeny Charkin, in an interview with Russia 24. The company reports that the economic impact of the technology has already doubled the initial investment, and the system is currently being tested at 32 rail hubs across the country.

Smarter Surveillance and Maintenance

AI is also being deployed in other areas of Russia’s transport infrastructure — from station surveillance systems to rolling stock monitoring. The technology tracks passenger flow, detects unsafe behavior, and evaluates train conditions to recommend repairs or maintenance.

According to Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin, similar AI tools are being tested to assess the technical reliability of aviation systems.

“This will be critical for high-speed rail operations, where constant data analysis is essential — and artificial intelligence plays a key role,” Nikitin said.

As RZD continues integrating AI into its operations, the company expects to create a fully digital rail ecosystem, improving both safety and speed across one of the world’s largest transportation networks.
