Russia Launches Mass Production of Drone Engines in Perm
The industrial region aims to become one of the country’s key hubs for unmanned aviation technology.
In Russia’s Perm Territory, a new research and production center called Parma-BAS has been established to accelerate the development of drone technologies. The initiative unites industrial enterprises, research institutes, and universities across the region, creating a full innovation ecosystem — from design to workforce training.
Last December, engineers at one of the region’s plants built and successfully tested a prototype small gas turbine engine for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The next stage is mass production, expected to begin soon.
Building a full drone industry
This year, the center began forming a dedicated manufacturing site for UAV components. Among the latest developments: Lightweight composite frames for quadcopters that reduce costs and weight; Prototype propellers and electronic speed controllers; Experimental brushless motors tailored for drones.
Experts estimate that Perm-based facilities will soon be able to produce up to 90% of all UAV components and assemblies — including software — entirely within the region.
At the same time, the A. M. Shvetsov Aviation College has launched new training programs for drone pilots and maintenance specialists in sectors such as agriculture, logistics, and energy.
