AI System at Pyatigorsk University Learns to Recognize North Caucasus Languages

Researchers at Pyatigorsk State University have developed an artificial intelligence system capable of recognizing the Kabardino-Circassian and Balkar languages, with plans to expand support to other languages spoken across the North Caucasus region.

The system has already been built and is now undergoing active refinement, with researchers improving the algorithms and increasing recognition accuracy. The technology relies on machine learning: the more audio material the system processes, the more accurately it understands natural speech, including regional dialects. The platform works not only with conversational speech, but also with literary language, taking into account the full complexity of grammar and vocabulary.

Developers plan to integrate the technology into voice assistants, translation services, and customer-support systems. In practice, this could allow residents of the region to interact with banks, hospitals, and government agencies in their native language without needing a human interpreter. If a user’s Russian-language proficiency is limited, the smart voice assistant would respond in the user’s native language instead.

Beyond its practical applications, the technology also serves as a tool for preserving linguistic heritage. Digitally recording spoken language makes it possible to build archives of living languages and pass them on to future generations. For communities whose languages face the risk of disappearing, the system could also become an important instrument of cultural preservation.
