Nemesis of Phone Scammers: Beeline Teaches AI to Detect Fraud Calls

One of Russia’s largest mobile operators, Beeline, has added a powerful new security feature to the PRO version of its Virtual Assistant: artificial intelligence that can unmask phone fraudsters.

Spotting Manipulation in Real Time

Beeline customers who have activated the Virtual Assistant PRO can rest assured—the AI monitors and analyzes all suspicious calls, detecting deception and manipulation. The AI model reads the audio waveform, behavioral cues, and conversation patterns. If the Virtual Assistant determines that the call’s characteristics suggest possible fraud, it will simply terminate the suspicious call and send an audio and SMS alert stating: ‘It is likely you were speaking to a scammer.’

Company representatives note that no human intervenes in the dialogue—the algorithm handles calls flagged as potentially fraudulent—ensuring both confidentiality and privacy. The Virtual Assistant is a key component of Beeline’s anti-fraud platform, which prevents fraudulent transactions and safeguards customers’ funds.

The assistant also blocks spam calls and messages, including those sent through messengers. The basic version is free for all subscribers by default, while the PRO version—offered for a fee—adds features such as call answering and conversation transcription.

We are enhancing our technologies to provide ever more reliable protection. Recently, we implemented automatic call termination for fraudulent calls that come alongside an SMS containing a government services code. Introducing enhanced AI-based protection creates a new level of security—especially important for customers vulnerable to social engineering tactics, such as children and the elderly. That’s why we recommend all our customers enable the PRO version of the Virtual Assistant for themselves and their loved ones

Stronger Protection Against Fraud

In recent years, millions of Russians have been targeted by online fraud, including phone scams and social media phishing. The demand for a digital defender is clear: between January and July 2025 alone, Beeline’s anti-fraud platform detected and blocked more than 382 million fraudulent calls before they reached customers.

This new level of phone scam protection and spam prevention strengthens PJSC VimpelCom’s (Beeline’s) position in the Russian market as a technologically advanced and responsible provider.

The new IT product will give residents enhanced safety, which is particularly important for the groups most vulnerable to fraud—children and seniors.

Exposing Fraud Schemes

Over the past five years, combating phone fraud and endless spam has become a priority for mobile operators. Several major Russian telecom players—SberMobile, Tinkoff Mobile, and Beeline—have deployed AI capable of identifying ‘phantom’ fraudsters who constantly change their phone numbers.

Previously, anti-fraud systems mostly identified suspicious numbers using big data analysis and blocked them. Now, Beeline’s AI analyzes the conversation itself, reacting to red flags in the dialogue.

The technology is not without flaws—the AI may occasionally flag an innocent caller and cut off a harmless conversation. However, protection systems are continuously improving, and experts expect these shortcomings to diminish over time. There is also potential to integrate similar systems into messengers, banking and government service platforms, and corporate communications.

Russia’s AI-based subscriber protection systems are advancing rapidly and may become an exportable technology for countries with high levels of voice-based fraud.
