Russia Builds First AI-Driven Lab to Improve Road Quality

The country’s first “smart laboratory” speeds up asphalt testing tenfold, slashes human error, and promises safer, longer-lasting roads across Russia.

Russia has developed its first artificial intelligence–powered laboratory for monitoring road surface quality. The system processes results up to ten times faster than traditional methods and nearly eliminates human error, giving road builders the tools to deliver more reliable and durable highways. Experts say the technology could significantly improve traffic safety, extend infrastructure lifespans, and streamline logistics.

According to developers at the Research Institute of Building Materials, the lab uses computer vision, sensors, and voice control. A digital assistant monitors lab technicians in real time, suggesting next steps, verifying procedures, and automatically checking results against national standards. This not only speeds up testing but also provides ongoing training for staff.

The results are striking: test protocols are now generated in just one to two minutes instead of 20–30, laboratory errors have been reduced by 95 percent, and the system helps employees master new techniques and standards. Trials have already been successfully conducted in several regions with the participation of leading industry companies.

Irina Morgunova, head of the organization “Road Safety Assurance,” called the project a breakthrough.

“The main advantage is moving from selective testing to continuous scanning of large road sections using AI. This makes it possible to obtain objective data on road conditions across vast distances in the shortest possible time,” Morgunova explained. “With a severe shortage of road specialists, automation is more relevant than ever. Traditionally, a human expert can collect only two or three samples per section, while the smart lab analyzes the entire volume of data, producing a complete and accurate picture.”

Officials say the system will not only accelerate inspections but also radically improve decision-making for road repairs and maintenance across Russia.
