Russia Uses AI to Streamline Children’s Health Screenings

Medical researchers have developed a system that monitors kids’ vital signs, flags abnormalities in real time, and doubles the detection rate of weight-related issues compared to standard exams.

Experts at Samara State Medical University, under Russia’s Ministry of Health, have created an AI-powered platform to modernize preventive health screenings for children, the university’s press service announced.

The system records key health parameters—including weight, blood pressure, lung capacity, and blood oxygen levels—and conducts ECG tests with automatic data transfer via Bluetooth devices. It then analyzes the results, highlighting deviations from the norm with a simple color-coded alert during the pre-doctoral screening stage.

So far, the technology has helped detect childhood obesity, cardiovascular problems, and bronchial abnormalities. Compared to traditional checkups, the AI is twice as likely to identify underweight children and 1.5 times more likely to flag excess weight.

The platform can also group children into risk categories for further in-depth examination. In the future, it may be integrated with Russia’s Unified Medical Information and Analytical System.
