Russian Messenger MAX Can Now Turn Video Messages Into Text

The national Russian messenger MAX has added a transcription feature for short video messages, known locally as “video circles,” making the platform more convenient for both everyday communication and work.

Users can now read what someone said in a video message even if they cannot turn on the sound during a meeting or in situations where silence is required. Notably, the video-to-text feature does not come with usage limits, meaning the transcription option cannot suddenly run out after repeated use.

Using the new MAX feature is straightforward. Users simply tap the icon next to a video message to receive a text version of the speech from the clip. The option is available in the latest version of the app. While reading the transcript, users can pause the video circle, handle other tasks and later return to continue playback or restart the message from the beginning.

Six Billion Calls

Russia’s digital communications platform for messaging and everyday services continues expanding both its feature set and user base. According to the developers, more than 120 million people have installed the app since launch, while its daily active audience has surpassed 85 million users. The platform has processed more than 150 billion messages and over 6 billion calls. Beyond the messenger itself, MAX also includes a range of integrated services such as an AI assistant, official mini apps and chatbots from Russian companies.

One of MAX’s most significant advantages as a multifunctional platform is its integration with government services, payment tools and business-oriented services. Users currently have access to one or more of the platform’s 7 million public and private channels. MAX is also available to users across CIS countries, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Analysts say that if developers continue expanding the ecosystem, MAX could eventually become an essential daily-use app for Russian users.

Putting Convenience First

The new MAX features represent more than a routine messenger update. They reflect Russia’s broader push to build a technologically advanced and user-friendly ecosystem of digital services. User convenience sits at the center of that strategy. MAX is evolving not only as a national messaging platform, but also as an ecosystem that includes payments, digital identity tools, mini apps, business services and various automated bots.

Today, secure data storage and reliable handling of user information have become increasingly important for consumers, businesses and especially government-sector organizations. Unlike many competing platforms, MAX stores data exclusively on Russian servers. The addition of video transcription also shows that the national messenger is catching up with global competitors in familiar user scenarios, a factor likely to matter for long-term competition and user loyalty.

A Tool for Work and Communication

The new feature allows users to understand video content without turning on audio, whether they are commuting, studying or sitting in places where listening to sound would be inconvenient. The update could also benefit people with hearing impairments, as well as users who prefer quickly reading messages instead of watching videos. In practice, the feature expands accessibility and lowers communication barriers for people with disabilities. At a national level, it also represents another step in the development of Russia’s own large-scale communications platform. The more everyday tasks MAX can handle inside a single ecosystem, the stronger its reputation is likely to become as a genuinely useful tool for both work and personal communication. Its growth is no longer driven only by integration with government services, but also by improvements to the everyday user experience.

MAX is moving ahead of foreign platforms and is unlikely to lose its leadership position when it comes to integration with government services. It is being built not simply as another messenger, but as a trusted communication environment connecting Russian citizens, businesses and the state. This is one of those cases where a domestic platform is not catching up with competitors, but setting a new direction instead
