T2 Connects Russia’s Atom EV to Its Network Services

Data is transmitted through dedicated communication channels, ensuring full data integrity and security.

Russian telecom operators are increasingly embedding connectivity services into vehicles. For drivers, this integration unlocks a wide range of digital services that have become essential in everyday mobility.

Security and Service Quality

It was recently announced that operator T2 has connected the first Russian electric vehicle, Atom, to its network. The vehicle, developed on a proprietary platform from the ground up, now includes an integrated eSIM profile across all versions. This enables stable operation of digital user services and in-vehicle telematics systems. The initiative also strengthens T2’s position in the B2B and M2M segments, while expanding its partnership with Russian IT company KAMA, the developer of Atom.

Full Protection Against Intrusions

Security architecture was a central focus of the project. The telecom operator designed a dedicated data transmission scheme that separates traffic streams – distinguishing between technical and user data. In practice, this separation increases traffic security while also improving overall service performance.

The operator’s network supports continuous transmission of vehicle telemetry, including battery status, electric drivetrain metrics, sensor data and other system parameters. Combined with Atom’s digital capabilities, this enables over-the-air software updates, real-time monitoring of system health and support for safe driving functions. Using an isolated data channel helps reduce the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access.

All Multimedia Functions on a Single Interface

User traffic is routed through a separate domain with internet access. The embedded eSIM profile provides drivers with access to navigation, maps, music, video services and other multimedia features. Looking ahead, Atom owners will be able to select data plans tailored to their multimedia usage and pay for connectivity services directly through the operator’s digital account interface.

“Without a doubt, the electric vehicle market remains an attractive and growing segment globally and in Russia. Its development is closely tied to the digital experience, making connectivity a core component of the business. Vehicles are increasingly taking on the role of digital devices, where connectivity acts as the foundational infrastructure for all services – from telematics to multimedia. In this model, the operator becomes part of the product,” said Alexander Mnatsakanyan, Deputy CEO for Strategic Planning at T2.

Preparing for Mass Production

It is important to note that this is not a pilot project but a fully developed digital product entering serial production. The partnership between KAMA and T2 marks a step toward the launch of mass production of the Atom EV, expected to begin as early as April.

The localization of automotive telematics has been underway for several years. As early as May 2021, AVTOVAZ launched the LADA Granta with the LADA Connect telematics platform, enabling features such as remote door unlocking and engine start.

A New Market Takes Shape

Russian telecom operators are also integrating their digital services into foreign-made vehicles. In August last year, Beeline and China Telecom signed a cooperation agreement to support the digitalization of vehicles from Chinese manufacturers. The partnership includes brands such as Changan, Avatr and Xpeng, focusing on connected car services, including multimedia, telematics and embedded connectivity.

As for Atom, it can now be positioned not just as the first Russian mass-produced electric vehicle but as a full-fledged digital platform for connected mobility. A new market is emerging in Russia at the intersection of automotive manufacturing and telecommunications. The successful rollout of the vehicle signals that import substitution is moving beyond hardware into platform-level digital ecosystems.

Today, T2 is already developing customized solutions for automakers and is ready to scale them to meet market needs – from designing data transmission architectures to ensuring high levels of security
