Tatneft Tests Automated Pipeline Leak Detection System

Tatneft has successfully tested a new automated system for detecting leaks of petroleum products in pipelines. The system uses a fiber-optic cable laid along the pipeline as a sensor, capturing any physical impacts along the route. This allows operators to remotely detect a wide range of events near the pipeline, from excavation work to the movement of vehicles and heavy machinery.
During testing, engineers simulated a leak using hot water instead of oil. The system identified the “fault” within minutes and accurately determined its location. Adjustable sensitivity helps reduce false positives from minor disturbances, while high detection speed and precision enable faster response and help prevent potential accidents.
