Yamal Launches Virtual Exhibition of Obdorsk Ostrog Archaeological Finds

The Institute of Northern Archaeology has published 3D models of artifacts discovered during excavations at Obdorsk Hill in Salekhard, offering visitors a virtual look at the history of the fortress and the people who defended it.

The 3D models were created from artifacts uncovered during the 2024–2025 excavation seasons. Among the most significant finds are fragments of the log fortification wall of the Obdorsk Ostrog, built in 1731, and the remains of the house of educator Ivan Shemanovsky.

“The models were created in several stages. Archaeologists first processed the collections recovered during the 2024–2025 field seasons. Each artifact was then photographed, after which specialists produced highly accurate digital replicas using 3D modeling technologies,” the Institute of Northern Archaeology said in a post on VKontakte.

The virtual exhibition complements the historical and architectural reconstruction of the Obdorsk Ostrog. The collection is available on the salekhard.nordarcheo.ru website. The project was funded through a grant from the President of the Russian Federation awarded by the Presidential Grants Foundation.
