AI to Help Travelers Save with Russia’s New Unified Digital Platform

Russia is developing a state‑backed travel app powered by artificial intelligence that tailors itineraries to individual preferences and budgets—offering locals a smarter, safer way to explore their own country

Why ChatGPT Falls Short for Domestic Travel

In recent months, Russian tourists have turned to ChatGPT to craft trip plans at home and abroad. While the OpenAI‑built neural network excels at broad suggestions, experts found it struggles with up‑to‑date details on lesser‑known events and locales—and sometimes makes glaring mistakes, like directing users to the wrong city or recommending expired festivals.

“Foreign AI tools simply aren’t the best fit for travelers navigating Russia’s unique regional offerings,” notes a tourism committee analyst

That conclusion drove a high‑level discussion in the State Duma’s tourism committee—joined by representatives from the Ministry of Digital Development, Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Economic Development, and the travel industry—on the need for a homegrown solution. The result: a draft law to launch a fully secure, Russian‑only digital platform that eliminates reliance on overseas neural networks.

No More Fake Routes—and Real Savings

The forthcoming platform promises benefits on both sides of the booking window. Tour operators and hoteliers gain a centralized channel to promote new destinations and package deals. Meanwhile, travelers get a trusted AI assistant that curates only verified information—filtering out “fake” routes—and surfaces the most cost‑effective itineraries. By aggregating offers and applying dynamic bundling, the app helps users stretch their travel budgets further, all within a familiar mobile interface.

Domestic tourism has seen steady growth as Russians increasingly opt to vacation at home, and the hospitality sector vies for attention with innovative offerings. Yet until now, there’s been no single service where clients, providers, and local authorities can collaborate seamlessly. This platform fills that gap—bringing together real‑time data on accommodations, attractions, dining, and souvenirs to meet each traveler’s unique needs.

Building Infrastructure—and Jobs—for the Future

Unlike existing niche apps, Russia’s unified digital travel solution will be comprehensive: from “where to go” and “where to stay” to “what to see” and “what to eat.” Backed by government investment and private capital, the rollout is expected to energize the domestic IT sector and catalyze new infrastructure projects across regions, spawning jobs and strengthening local brands. Integration with national programs—such as the “tourism cashback” initiative and existing “smart travel” services—will further elevate the platform’s appeal.

Expert opinion

The group's experts immediately proposed launching a single digital platform (EDP) in the tourism sector, which would integrate all the capabilities of AI. Aggregators of services and owners of accommodation facilities will be able to attract new clients with its help, and travelers will receive a trusted digital assistant, since it is domestic
