Russia's "Smart Mine" System Is Automating Safety and Operations Underground

Russia has launched a digital mining platform that tracks workers, monitors gas levels, and even controls conveyor belts — part of a broader push to modernize its industrial backbone.

Russia's mining sector just received a high-tech upgrade. A new integrated system called “Smart Mine” is now being deployed to enhance safety and automate operations deep underground. Developed by Russian engineering firm Granch, the platform unites two advanced subsystems — SBGPS and GRANCH MIS — under a single digital infrastructure.

At its core, SBGPS functions as a real-time tracking and environmental monitoring tool. It keeps tabs on the exact location of personnel and machinery, monitors gas concentrations, and ensures constant voice communication — even during emergencies. The system's edge lies in its all-in-one design, combining telemetry, voice communication, gas analysis, and video surveillance into a unified safety network. It can detect oxygen levels and the presence of hazardous gases in work zones and quickly locate and evacuate personnel in case of an emergency.

The second component, GRANCH MIS, is essentially an intelligent automation platform. It handles core industrial functions — from conveyor control to ventilation and power management — without requiring human oversight.

“Smart Mine” includes a range of specialized equipment: measurement controllers, base stations, alert systems, telemetry transmitters, and rugged smartphones. According to Granch, these smartphones go well beyond voice calls — they double as walkie-talkies, thermal imaging devices, and even night vision tools.

The system is designed to boost safety, efficiency, and resilience across mining operations. More broadly, it’s a clear signal of Russia’s intent to digitally transform its industrial sectors — even in traditionally analog domains like mining.
