Specialists from the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics at the Higher School of Economics and the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics used generative design to develop microwave devices, the university’s press service said. According to the researchers, the goal was to speed up and simplify the design of microstrip components used in telecommunications, satellite navigation, wireless communications, and radar systems. Designing these components is highly complex, as even minor changes in trace geometry, spacing, or resonator shape can significantly affect device performance.

Design Reduced to Minutes

Generative design of microwave devices significantly simplifies the selection of trace parameters. Machine learning algorithms can generate device topology based on predefined specifications.

As the researchers noted, the team compiled a structured dataset of 16,250 parametric configurations of microstrip filters. They trained four algorithms on this dataset and selected the most accurate one. Tests showed that it captures real physical patterns. As a result, design time has been reduced to just a few minutes. The software can already be used to develop microwave electronics products.
