AI System Identifies Vehicles Even Without License Plates
The system is designed to help identify traffic offenders more effectively than existing alternatives.
Scientists at Volgograd State Technical University have developed a new system for detecting traffic violations. The technology overcomes one of the biggest weaknesses of existing traffic camera systems, which often fail when drivers conceal or alter information on their license plates.
"Unlike conventional systems that require a clearly readable license plate, our software identifies vehicles using indirect characteristics even when registration numbers are hidden, missing, or intentionally altered," said Danila Parygin, head of the Department of Digital Technologies in Urban Studies, Architecture, and Construction at Volgograd State Technical University.
The system also uses blockchain technology to ensure the integrity and security of stored data.
The developers said the technology could be deployed in transportation monitoring systems, situational awareness centers, and analytical platforms used by traffic enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and other government services.
