Retail Leads Russia’s Digital Transformation Race
New research shows the retail sector moving faster than other industries in adopting digital technologies.

IBS Analytical Center conducted a series of studies examining the adoption of digital technologies across key sectors of the Russian economy. The research found that retail continues to outpace other industries in terms of digital development.
Key Industries Examined
IBS experts prepared 13 analytical reports focused on business digital transformation. The studies covered development, construction of nonresidential buildings, building materials production, metallurgy, the agro-industrial sector, the food industry and retail. Analysts also examined media holdings, digital content distribution platforms, television broadcasting, media content production, telecommunications and the digital entertainment industry.
IBS analysts assessed the level of digital integration using the proprietary IBS Analytical Cube methodology. The framework considers factors such as the development of IT infrastructure, adoption of modern technologies, companies’ innovation activity and the strength of professional teams.
Artificial Intelligence Finds a Natural Fit in Retail
Retail continues to lead in the adoption of digital technologies. More than 90 percent of large companies use big data and artificial intelligence to analyze demand and personalize offers.
About 80 percent of major market players have created their own IT divisions responsible for developing internal digital tools and services for business management. At the same time, the sector faces serious challenges in information security. Over the past five years, roughly 90 percent of large companies have mentioned data leaks in public sources.
Digital Technologies Transform Industry and Agriculture
The agro-industrial sector is actively deploying artificial intelligence and projects involving unmanned technologies. However, the level of adoption remains uneven across regions, and the share of domestic IT products still needs to increase.
Developer companies demonstrate a stable level of digital maturity. They use data analytics, monitoring systems and artificial intelligence at different stages of construction. Digital tools help reduce project implementation timelines by about 30 percent.
