Russian Scientists Develop a Sensor That Weighs Vehicles While in Motion

The new technology can be used for automated overload control and intelligent traffic management.

Researchers at Novosibirsk State University have patented a new technology—a distributed fiber-optic sensor designed to weigh trucks directly while they are moving.

The new device uses standard optical fiber, which could significantly reduce the cost of the technology. The sensitive element is embedded under the asphalt across a traffic lane. The key feature lies in the sensor’s design: when a wheel passes over the sensitive zone, deformation is detected through changes in the light signal within the fiber. Because the zones are isolated, adjacent sections are not affected by the deformation.

Smart Data Processing

Artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms can be used to process deformation data collected by the sensor.

“Unlike traditional approaches, where signals are analyzed only from individual sensitive sections, the proposed system enables a comprehensive analysis of the spatial response along the entire length of the sensor. This approach makes it possible to process the full picture of deformations that arise during vehicle movement and to apply machine learning algorithms, including neural network models of various architectures, for more accurate prediction of deformation distribution and improved reliability in assessing vehicle parameters,” the project description states.
