A Robot That Measures Every Drop

Russian engineers have unveiled a multifunctional dosing robot designed to automate precision tasks across microelectronics, mechanical engineering, and chemical production.

Researchers at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University have introduced a new multifunctional robotic dispenser, the university reported.

Initially created to automate routine tasks in the university’s lab, the system was designed with a user-first approach. The team focused on simplifying robot operations, resulting in a tool that requires no bulky manuals — a key advantage over many existing solutions.

“Reproducing processes, increasing precision, and speeding up the production of complex elements required developing custom hardware, electronics, and software. That’s how the first version of the robotic system was born,” said Alexander Semench, director of the university’s Nanoengineering and Coatings Research and Education Center.

Robot Architecture

The three-axis robot integrates a precision dosing unit and a machine-vision system for real-time feedback. It can dispense materials using piston mechanisms or air pressure, while the onboard vision module enables operation along non-preprogrammed trajectories. Operators can guide the robot using color-coded commands interpreted by the calibrated camera.

Its technical specifications make the robot suitable for microelectronics, mechanical engineering, and chemical applications. The platform supports up to two manipulators and six peripheral devices.

The Nanoengineering and Coatings team tested eight design iterations before reaching the final configuration. One prototype has already completed more than 100,000 cycles without accuracy loss and is ready for mass production.
