The Saratov branch of energy company T Plus is preparing for the upcoming heating season by using a robotic defect detection system to inspect underground utility networks.

The high-tech device is equipped with a sensor array and can be deployed without digging up pipelines. Engineers insert the robot into the system through a technical access point. The machine can operate inside pipes ranging from 500 to 1,200 millimeters in diameter and automatically adjusts to surrounding conditions.

During inspections, the robot evaluates metal integrity, measures wall thickness, assesses corrosion levels, checks weld reliability, and records contamination, foreign objects, and structural deformation. The technology can detect defects as small as 0.5 millimeters. Data from onboard sensors and cameras is transmitted to specialists in real time.

Company engineers say the robotic system is designed to complement, rather than replace, traditional pipeline inspection methods. Over the course of the summer, the robot is expected to inspect roughly two kilometers of pipeline infrastructure.
