SIBUR Launches Flying Laboratory to Detect Gas Leaks at Industrial Plants

SiburTyumenGaz has developed a drone-based air monitoring system for gas processing facilities, with the company saying no direct equivalents currently exist on the market.

The technology was presented by Danil Maksimov, head of the company’s digital office, at the NEFT 4.0 industry congress, which brought together more than 200 companies in 2026. The drone is equipped with high-precision sensors linked to a navigation system. During flight, it collects data on gas concentrations and ties the readings to geographic coordinates. The result is a digital map that allows specialists to immediately identify problem areas.

“Today, digital technologies are evolving from auxiliary tools into the foundation of safe and sustainable industrial operations. They make it possible to take management decisions quickly using verified data. Our goal is to move from periodic inspections to continuous real-time monitoring,” Maksimov said.

Unlike stationary or manual systems, the “flying laboratory” can inspect large-scale, elevated, and multi-level industrial facilities without blind spots. The platform reduces risks for personnel and shortens the time needed to detect leaks in hard-to-reach areas. The prototype was developed jointly with metrology specialists from Zapsibtransgaz.
