Russia Is to Test Electricity Trading on Online Marketplaces
Electricity will soon be bought and sold via digital trading platforms under a pilot program launching in several Russian regions.

Starting in 2026, Russia will roll out a pilot project that allows electricity to be traded on electronic marketplaces. The experiment will cover both wholesale and retail markets, and participation will be voluntary.
Already Underway
The pilot is set to begin on February 1, 2026, and will run through December 31, 2027. Participating regions include the Altai Republic, Mari El, Udmurtia and Khakassia, as well as Altai Krai and the Oryol and Tambov regions.
Government officials say the goal is to test, in real-world conditions, how electricity sales can be conducted through electronic trading platforms. The initiative is expected to lower administrative and economic barriers for market participants and make transactions more accessible for both suppliers and consumers.
Power Supply and Everything Around It
The platforms will be used to conclude electricity supply contracts and to formalize deals involving related and supplementary goods, work and services tied to power delivery.
Once the pilot concludes, authorities will assess its results and determine whether electronic electricity trading can be scaled to other regions across the country.
