Russia’s Top Nuclear Plant Is Also Its Most Digitally Advanced

The Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant, equipped with advanced IT systems, has once again been ranked the best in Russia’s annual industry competition.

Russia has announced the results of its annual competition recognizing the country’s best nuclear power plants. The event highlights best practices in the sector and encourages wider adoption of effective technologies and safety standards. In the 2025 ranking, the Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant took first place, followed by the Kalinin and Kola plants.

The evaluation process included a broad range of criteria—from safety and operational efficiency to environmental responsibility. But this year, digital innovation played a decisive role. Balakovo, which has now topped the list for the 21st time, stood out for its IT-driven performance.

In a notable example last year, the plant successfully carried out a complex technical operation: the removal and recycling of six decommissioned steam generators, all under strict ecological compliance. The operation was enabled by advanced IT solutions integrated throughout the facility.

Beyond the plant’s digital infrastructure, Balakovo also hosts a high-tech training center for nuclear staff and university students from Rosatom-affiliated institutions. The facility includes digital equipment for medical screenings and other operational tasks.

According to competition organizers, Russia’s nuclear energy sector continues to demonstrate high standards of responsibility, resilience, and adaptability. Its embrace of modern technology allows it to respond to global market shifts while ensuring reliable heat and power to the Russian population.
