Hosting provider RUVDS has conducted its first FM radio broadcasting session from the stratosphere over the North Pole. The project was carried out jointly with Stratonautica, Murmansk Arctic University, Rosatom and Radio Mayak.

During the experiment, a stratospheric platform was raised to an altitude of 30 kilometers. The North Pole was chosen for the tests because of the absence of industrial interference and regulatory restrictions on broadcasting in the civilian frequency range.

"We tested a concept that could eventually provide radio coverage across all of Russia from a satellite. To the best of our knowledge, this was the first time FM broadcasting from the stratosphere in the frequency range used by consumer VHF receivers had been carried out. It was an extremely complex experiment," said RUVDS CEO Nikita Tsaplin.

The stratospheric platform covered a 100-kilometer route and autonomously returned to a designated location. Data from its sensors and experimental multispectral camera will be used to assess climate change, monitor marine mammal populations and track conditions along the Northern Sea Route.
