The Russian government has approved a new strategy for developing the country’s autonomous freight transportation market. The document outlines plans for a major expansion of automation across the logistics sector over the coming years.

By 2035, autonomous trucks are expected to handle up to 19% of all freight transportation in Russia. The fleet of self-driving vehicles could reach as many as 57,000 units. Officials also say each autonomous truck is expected to operate at roughly twice the efficiency of conventional vehicles, both in delivery speed and cargo throughput.

Over time, the rollout of autonomous freight transport could create an entirely new market worth up to 4 trillion rubles ($52 billion). Officials also expect automation to gradually shift workers into more technologically advanced segments of the industry.

“By 2030, the combined savings for market participants could reach 4.2 billion rubles ($54 million) annually, rising to 108.6 billion rubles ($1.4 billion) per year by 2035,” the Transport Ministry said.

Vehicles capable of operating without human drivers are expected to begin appearing on Russian roads within the next two years.
