AI Streamlines Work in Russia’s Chemical Industry

Artificial intelligence tools can save researchers between 40% and 60% of their time, according to scientists at Tomsk State University.

The adoption of artificial intelligence in the chemical sector can save up to 40% of researchers’ time. In most cases, AI handles routine tasks such as data calculations, patent searches, generating tables and processing large datasets. Dmitry Reshetnikov, head of the AI in Chemistry and Materials Science laboratory at Tomsk State University, told TASS.

According to him, applied tasks can reduce workloads by up to 20%, while the quality of results often improves. In some cases, more than half of the time traditionally required for a task can be saved. Across the chemical industry as a whole, organizations using artificial intelligence report efficiency gains ranging from 10% to 40%, particularly in routine operations.

Reshetnikov notes that one of the main benefits of introducing AI into chemistry is freeing up human resources. Researchers can then focus on more complex and critical tasks. Currently, about 40% of AI applications are used in predictive analytics, where systems model chemical synthesis on computers, sparing scientists from a large number of laboratory experiments.

Assistant and Support Tool

Artificial intelligence also provides major benefits as a research assistant, where involvement can reach 70%. AI conducts patent searches, generates tables and presentations, and processes images. Humans typically handle only the final 20% of the work.

For now, AI mainly serves as a supporting tool. But within about five years, Reshetnikov believes digital assistants will become a standard element of every workplace. Within the next two years, artificial intelligence could also take over most document workflows.

Earlier we reported that Russia plans to begin production of its first domestic tandem triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer with soft ionization in 2026–2027.
