Russia’s largest diamond mining company, Alrosa, has approved a digital transformation strategy through 2027. The company plans to spend a total of 10.8 billion rubles (about $130 million) on key initiatives, the company’s press service told IT Russia.

Between 2021 and 2024, the company transitioned to domestic software and introduced Russian-made radio-electronic equipment. Those plans were completed well ahead of schedule.

According to CEO Pavel Marinychev, who is also a member of the Bureau of the Russian Engineering Union, the company systematically invests in domestic technology projects that significantly improve operational efficiency.

“Digital transformation for Alrosa is no longer an experiment but a core element of our operating model. New projects help the company strengthen its leadership in the industry,” Marinychev said.

Demand for digital products in industry is growing rapidly. Their popularity is easy to explain – they have already proven their effectiveness in practice. The company’s new strategy expands the functional scope of digital initiatives and focuses on applying digital technologies in processes directly linked to diamond mining. Key priorities include developing digital competencies, managing digital culture and data, and deploying digital tools.

AI in Exploration, Mining and Administrative Processes

Particular attention will be paid to artificial intelligence. Neural networks are expected to be used in geological exploration, mining and ore processing, as well as in administrative and business processes and in industrial and information security.

“The company holds leading positions in import substitution in the mining industry. We continue to work with Russian software developers and equipment manufacturers to make domestic digital solutions even more reliable in the harsh northern conditions. We are also actively building technological partnerships with leaders of the Russian market in hybrid cloud solutions and in the deployment of corporate artificial intelligence models,” said Vadim Zheltukhin, the company’s chief IT officer.

The strategy’s roadmap includes more than 100 initiatives across 13 key functional areas. These include mineral exploration, mining and processing, engineering and capital construction, occupational safety and industrial safety, maintenance and repairs, as well as finance, procurement, human resources, legal functions and information security.

Earlier we reported that the Alrosa Innovation and Technology Center completed the rollout of a machine-vision system at one of the company’s key production sites – the Udachny underground mine.
