AI to Help Russian Scientists Predict Durability of Construction Materials

Russian researchers are turning to artificial intelligence to assess the climate resilience of polymer composites, dramatically reducing testing time and costs.

Scientists at Ogarev Mordovia State University have introduced a new AI-powered method for evaluating how long polymer composite materials can last under various climate conditions. The technique is expected to accelerate testing processes and improve the accuracy of durability forecasts, according to Info-RM.

The research project, set to run from 2026 through 2028, will involve producing sample materials and testing them in three distinct climate zones: temperate (Saransk), subtropical (Gelendzhik), and extremely cold (Yakutsk). Data collected on deformation, wear, and other physical parameters will be processed using machine learning algorithms to build predictive models of material lifespan.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has already endorsed the initiative, noting its potential to significantly advance the construction materials industry.

Ultimately, the study aims to produce practical guidelines for using polymer composites in different regions of Russia—particularly important as demand grows for energy-efficient and durable building materials.
