HSE St. Petersburg Students Gain Access to VK Cloud Computing Resources

Students at the School of Informatics, Physics and Technology (SHIFT), a joint project of HSE St. Petersburg and VK, have gained access to cloud GPU computing resources for academic and research projects. The resources were provided by VK Education and VK Cloud.

The infrastructure allows students to tackle tasks of varying complexity, from research projects to applied AI solutions, and work on real-world cases from VK and other partners. Access to GPU resources has increased data processing speed: in one project, the experimental cycle was reduced from several weeks to several days. Students also developed a method that improves image generation quality by 10% and created a system for detecting deepfakes in real-time video streams.

"The results speak for themselves. For example, one student's research formed the basis of three scientific papers. We have already submitted one to an international conference, and two more are being prepared for publication in leading journals," said Anton Zarubin, dean of SHIFT.

According to him, without cloud infrastructure, it is difficult for students to apply their knowledge in practice, as local computing resources cannot handle such volumes of data.
