Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has backed a project to build a new high-capacity data center in Yakutia. The facility is expected to serve the entire Far Eastern Federal District. Work is currently underway on its power supply.

Mishustin said that in a changing economy, data are becoming increasingly important.

"Data are the new oil, the new platinum, the new natural resources of the 21st century. They continue to grow in value and represent a unique asset," Mishustin said.

The project reflects the region's specific characteristics. Yakutia has abundant energy resources but cannot efficiently export electricity because of its remote location. Locating energy-intensive facilities such as data centers and cryptocurrency mining farms in the region makes it possible to use surplus generating capacity domestically.
