Russia Develops a Digital Platform to Optimize Cargo Logistics

The System Uses Complex Mathematical Modeling to Cut Costs and Boost Efficiency

In Russia, Gazprom Neft has developed a digital logistics optimization service for the steel producer Severstal, designed to streamline cargo transportation and planning across the company’s vast supply chain. The new system is expected to generate more than 2 billion rubles (around $22 million) in economic benefit by reducing transportation costs by 9% through smarter fleet utilization.

The service is built on a sophisticated mathematical model that covers the entire supply chain of rolled metal products — from production sites to end customers. It can plan shipments up to 18 months in advance, accounting for dozens of variables such as sales schedules, seasonal demand, transport availability, and the capacity of logistics hubs. The algorithm not only builds optimal delivery routes but continuously adjusts them in response to changing market conditions.

“Together with our partner, we’ve developed a tool that not only solves operational challenges but also helps plan and optimize complex industrial and business processes over the long term,” said Evgeny Bragar, CEO of Gazpromneft-Snabzhenie.

A Comprehensive Intelligent Product

Executives at Severstal say the partnership has already proven successful.

“Collaboration with Gazprom Neft was a major step forward in developing digital planning across our logistics network,” said Alexander Koshmin, head of production planning and customer service at Severstal. “Thanks to the team’s expertise and flexibility, the model was integrated seamlessly — without losing time or quality.”

The project sets a new benchmark for logistics management in heavy industry, offering not just incremental improvements but a comprehensive intelligent system capable of making large-scale enterprises more efficient and adaptable.
