Russian Scientists Build Digital Twin of Carbon Monitoring Site

Drones and ground scanning used to study ecosystem carbon absorption

Researchers at Far Eastern Federal University used digital tools to assess how ecosystems absorb greenhouse gases, the university’s press service said. The team created a digital twin of a carbon monitoring site in Ajax Bay on the Sea of Japan, combining terrestrial laser scanning with multispectral drone imaging.

Mapping Every Plant

According to the university, climate dynamics are closely linked to how coastal and marine ecosystems absorb and store carbon. To assess this process, researchers analyzed every tree and shrub within the study area. Data was collected in both winter and summer, and all vegetation was classified. The findings were used to build an interactive map. The study showed that the highest carbon concentration is found in forested areas. The digital model will serve as the basis for long-term carbon balance monitoring.

“To estimate biomass and carbon storage, we are developing a model that accounts for the specific characteristics of the study area. Data is collected using both ground-based and airborne laser scanning, as well as conventional and multispectral aerial imaging with unmanned systems,” said Evgeny Lyalyushko, senior lecturer at the Department of Georesource Monitoring and Development at the Polytechnic Institute of Far Eastern Federal University.
