Russia’s AI Learns to Recognize Handwritten Signatures on Documents

A new AI-based system developed by Russian company Smart Engines can instantly verify the presence of handwritten signatures on documents, streamlining work for accountants and banking professionals.

Smart Engines, a Moscow-based AI company, has unveiled a digital system capable of instantly detecting handwritten signatures on official documents. The innovation promises to make life easier for accountants, bankers, and document managers by automating one of the most time-consuming steps in paperwork verification. The technology scans document pages and “focuses its vision” on the areas where signatures appear, ignoring background text, stamps, and visual noise.

Precision and Automation

According to the developers, the system achieved an impressive 95.9% accuracy rate during testing on an open dataset of 72,000 files. It supports over 100 languages and integrates with the Smart Document Engine platform, which is designed to process and extract data from multiple forms and templates.

Project head and Doctor of Technical Sciences Vladimir Arlazarov noted that the technology can fully automate one of the most labor-intensive stages of document verification, significantly reducing human error and freeing up staff time for more complex tasks.

Global Recognition

The AI solution has already attracted international attention. In October, Smart Engines presented the system at the International Conference on Machine Vision (ICMV 2025) in Paris, where it received high marks from experts. The achievement highlights Russia’s growing capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence and computer vision — areas where domestic engineers are now competing on the global stage.
