Researchers from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tambov State Technical University have won the TsifRaProm (Digital Industry Accelerator) accelerator with a project to develop smart glasses for people with hearing impairments.

The device addresses the challenge of information accessibility for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The glasses display subtitles of spoken speech directly in front of the user’s eyes in real time.

Potential for Broad Use

“Existing hearing aids are often ineffective in noisy environments or when communicating with several people at once, while our smart glasses allow users to see the spoken words of their conversation partners directly in front of their eyes. We are creating not just a gadget but a tool for social equality that will help deaf and hard-of-hearing people around the world feel more confident in education, work, and everyday life. Members of our team have hearing impairments themselves, which means we understand the product’s target audience very well,” said one of the developers, student Anastasia Kuznetsova.

Earlier, the company Neuroimplanty ELVIS began testing Russia’s first domestically developed cochlear implant designed to restore hearing. The device consists of an external processor and an internal electrode that stimulates the auditory nerve.
