More than 10 million tons of petroleum products have been shipped through the Operator tovarnykh postavok (Commodity Supply Operator platform) digital service of Russian Railways (RZhD) via exchange transactions. The platform is a joint project of Tsifrovaya logistika (Digital Logistics, a subsidiary of RZhD), the Peterburgskaya birzha (St. Petersburg Exchange), and the Federalnaya antimonopolnaya sluzhba (Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia). The service allows exchange traders to arrange rail transportation of goods entirely in electronic form after a deal is concluded. Customers can track all shipment data through a personal account interface. The information was reported by the publication RZhD-Partner.

Growing Demand

Over several years of operation, the platform has become one of the main tools connecting suppliers and buyers of petroleum products in the Russian market.

“We are seeing growing demand from exchange clients, which confirms the relevance of our digital and logistics services. The key outcome is that we can now speak about the development of an organized commodity market based on the latest digital technologies,” said Evgeny Charkin, deputy head of Russian Railways.

Expanding Toward the Petrochemical Market

Last year, exchange transactions using the RZhD service accounted for 32.7 percent of all rail-based deliveries executed through exchange trades. The number of trading participants registered on the platform increased 1.6 times to 1,084.

Of these, 1,055 were buyers and 29 were sellers. The service’s functionality is expected to expand in the coming years. In 2026, the RZhD platform mechanism is planned to be extended to the petrochemical products market, as well as to export shipments of timber and other goods traded on the St. Petersburg Exchange.

Earlier reports said engineers in Ulyanovsk are developing the Stalker drone for use by Russian Railways.
