Mariinsky-2, one of St. Petersburg’s theaters, is to stage a production created with the use of artificial intelligence, the newspaper Vecherniy Sankt-Peterburg reported. The mystical opera Mandragora was left unfinished by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Musician Pyotr Dranga completed the work with the help of AI.

The opera tells the story of the magical mandrake plant and sacrificial love. AI tools helped the creative team reconstruct the libretto and develop the stage design and costumes. Dranga relied on surviving materials and the artistic language of the Russian composer. The innovative production will be open to the public.

New Creative Possibilities

Tchaikovsky began working on the piece in 1896 at the suggestion of his friend, botany professor Sergei Rachinsky. He wrote only a six-minute outline. Contemporary creators and modern technology were able to turn that fragment into a full-scale production. AI was used to generate a vivid visual backdrop for the set design and to create imaginative costumes.
