AI Helps Judge Russia’s Weightlifting Championship for the First Time
For the first time, artificial intelligence is assisting judges at the Russian Weightlifting Championship, which is being held in Moscow from September 9 to 13.
The technology was developed by the Sber AI team for the Federation of Weightlifting of Russia, and the system will remain part of the competition process after the tournament.
The program analyzes video of athletes’ performances and builds a digital model of their movements. On the first day of the tournament, it changed the outcome of the men’s 60-kilogram final: Ravil Dzhafarov, who lifted 141 kilograms, was initially declared the winner, but the AI detected that he had not held the barbell under control. The attempt was canceled, and Kirill Ryabykh took the gold.
Sberbank confirmed that the project is a step toward scaling up the technology.
