The Additive Manufacturing Center of the United Engine Corporation (UEC) is introducing artificial intelligence into the evaluation of metal powders used in 3D printing. Rather than simply classifying materials, the system analyzes them at the level of individual particles using images captured through electron microscopy.

The new technology is expected to significantly reduce employees' workload. Instead of performing the full analysis manually, specialists will only need to prepare microscopy images for processing and verify the completed results.

“The key advantage of this development is the shift from manual analysis of microscopic images to automated measurements,” said Konstantin Korobov, a process engineer at the UEC Additive Manufacturing Center. “Neural networks automate the most labor-intensive stage by identifying individual particles and calculating their characteristics. The AI measures parameters including particle count, area, perimeter, and equivalent diameter.”

The technology will soon be tested on multiple batches of metal powders. Software interfaces will also be developed before the system moves into deployment in industrial production.
