Alfa-Bank Builds an API Bridge to the Digital Ruble

Alfa-Bank has launched a dedicated API channel that allows large enterprises to manage digital ruble accounts directly from their existing ERP and treasury systems. The ready-to-use software eliminates the need for costly in-house integration projects.

The solution is designed for companies with annual revenue exceeding 120 million rubles (approximately $1.5 million), which, together with Russia's largest banks, must begin supporting customer transactions in the new form of the national currency starting September 1 of this year. The API closes the gap between the Bank of Russia's digital ruble platform, where the central bank serves as both the issuer and operator of the Digital Ruble, and companies' internal financial management systems.

Automating Corporate Finance

Companies will not need to create separate accounting environments for the digital ruble. Instead, Alfa-Bank's solution integrates it into existing financial workflows while minimizing operational risk. Through the API, businesses can automatically retrieve account balances, generate statements, reconcile payments, and monitor liquidity. That removes the need for manual file exports, saving both time and staff resources.

"Integration through Alfa API removes the main barrier to scaling the technology – implementation complexity," explained Damir Battulin, Director of Digital Channel Development at Alfa-Bank.

This is the first solution on the Russian market designed to integrate the digital ruble directly into the corporate IT environment. The specialized API also strengthens the technological independence of Russia's payment infrastructure.

Building the Technical Foundation

At the current stage, the solution addresses the core requirement of transferring data for accounting purposes. Broader adoption will require standardized APIs and ready-made connectors for widely used Russian ERP platforms such as 1C, Parus, Galaktika, and others. That will allow companies to initiate and approve payments directly from their ERP systems, manage balances, execute bulk payments including payroll programs, and integrate with online cash registers. These capabilities are expected to expand alongside the large-scale rollout of the digital ruble in 2027 and 2028.

Using the digital ruble is expected to provide tangible financial benefits for businesses. By decision of the Bank of Russia, transfers remain free of charge through the end of this year. Beginning in January next year, transfers between legal entities will carry a flat fee of 15 rubles (about $0.20) per transaction, regardless of the amount. For large B2B payments, that significantly reduces transaction costs compared with traditional acquiring services or interbank transfers.

From Pilot Program to Enterprise Integration

Russia began testing the digital ruble in 2023 using core scenarios including account opening, peer-to-peer transfers, and QR code payments. At that stage, the pilot involved 13 banks, about 600 individuals, and 30 companies. The following year, the program expanded to include 9,000 individuals, 1,200 businesses, and B2B transfers. In 2025, the Digital Ruble platform demonstrated its technological resilience not only through a larger volume of core operations but also through the successful implementation of smart contracts. That same year, the Bank of Russia concluded that no critical barriers remained. It also approved a phased roadmap for nationwide deployment of the new form of currency, with mass adoption beginning on September 1, 2026.

IT Adaptation

Businesses will need to adapt established treasury operations to support transactions in the third form of Russia's national currency while upgrading their IT systems to meet the regulator's stringent cybersecurity requirements. The market is already moving from pilot projects to enterprise-grade integration solutions, as demonstrated by Alfa-Bank's API, which connects the Digital Ruble platform directly with companies' internal IT infrastructure. Similar releases from other systemically important banks are likely to follow in the near future. Meanwhile, software developers are expected to focus on accelerating integration with widely used ERP platforms and expanding support for programmable payments.

The digital ruble will circulate alongside cash and traditional non-cash rubles. Beginning this fall, large-scale deployment of Digital Ruble scenarios for major B2B settlements, e-commerce, and smart contracts is set to begin.

Large businesses no longer need to maintain separate accounting environments. Retrieving digital ruble statements through the API makes the Digital Ruble a fully integrated part of everyday payment operations alongside traditional non-cash rubles. The solution is universal and can be used across all business segments
