Russian Archaeologists Train AI on Verified Scientific Data

The Russian Academy of Sciences has launched a pilot project to train artificial intelligence on curated archaeological data, helping researchers obtain answers based on verified academic sources rather than unvetted internet content.

The project, launched by the Russian Academy of Sciences with support from Russia's Ministry of Science and Higher Education, was announced by Nikolay Makarov, Vice President of the Academy and Director of the Institute of Archaeology. According to Makarov, AI's greatest near-term value for historians and archaeologists lies not in making discoveries on its own but in navigating vast collections of empirical research, including excavation reports, scientific papers, artifact catalogs, and field documentation. Even experienced researchers find it difficult to work through these materials manually. The project also includes organizing images of archaeological artifacts and analyzing satellite imagery to identify archaeological sites, an approach that has already been applied in Peru, Egypt, and the Middle East.

The project's biggest challenge is assembling a high-quality corpus of verified data, a process that takes months. If the pilot demonstrates sufficient accuracy, the next step will be to develop a dedicated search and analytical platform for researchers and museums.
