Smart Cameras Begin Monitoring Forests in Russia’s Komi Republic

Authorities in Russia’s Komi Republic have launched an automated forest-fire video monitoring system in which 27 smart cameras continuously watch forested areas and instantly report signs of smoke. The system operates without human involvement.

The cameras are connected to a nationwide wildfire monitoring network and continuously scan surrounding areas. As soon as the system detects signs of smoke, an alert is immediately sent to the unified emergency response service. That allows firefighting crews to respond at the earliest stage, before a fire can spread and cause major damage to forests.

Russia’s Federal Forestry Agency said the primary goal is to expand monitoring coverage across as much forest land as possible in order to detect wildfire hotspots quickly.

The project is being implemented as part of the Ekologicheskoye blagopoluchiye (Environmental Well-Being program). Komi’s Ministry of Ecology said it will continue deploying digital technologies for environmental protection across the region.
