Russia Is Developing a Neural Network to Treat Severe Brain Injuries

The intelligent system is designed to support rapid clinical decisions during the critical early phase, when patient survival depends on speed and diagnostic accuracy.

An artificial intelligence system aimed at improving treatment for traumatic brain injuries is being developed in Nizhny Novgorod, according to Aleksey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the medical news agency Statsionar-Press, who announced the project on his Telegram channel.

The AI-based system is expected to help physicians make clinical decisions during the acute phase of combined traumatic brain injury. The project is being carried out by an interdisciplinary team of neurosurgeons and researchers from the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after Semashko, Privolzhsky Research Medical University, and scientists from the Institute of Applied Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A Digital Assessment Scale

As neurosurgeon Artem Kopylov of the Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital explained, the AI will correlate multislice computed tomography (MSCT) brain scans with digital markers of critical patient deterioration.

“An algorithm for analyzing MSCT images and training AI models on that data has already been developed. Neurosurgeons can now accurately determine the volume of complex intracranial hematomas and pinpoint injury locations. This information will be supplemented by a digital severity assessment scale for patients at the pre-hospital and early hospital stages of treatment,” Kopylov said.
