Russia Uses AI to Launch Production of the Country’s Lightest Glass Bottle

A Siberian glassmaker has introduced AI-driven technology to cut weight, reduce environmental impact, and optimize costs in bottle production.

Russian packaging producers have long sought ways to optimize glass bottle manufacturing, aiming not only for cost savings but also for a reduced environmental footprint. Now, thanks to digital technologies, that breakthrough has been achieved.

One of Russia’s leading container manufacturers, Novosibirsk-based Sibsteklo—which produces 900 million items annually—announced it is transitioning to recycled materials. The company plans to invest more than 3 billion rubles (around 33 million USD) into modernization. The full transition to high environmental standards is expected to be completed by 2032, powered by domestic IT innovations.

Sibsteklo has organized the collection and delivery of recycled glass from across Siberia and the Russian Far East, including Sakhalin. Thanks to digital modernization, remelting glass cullet now requires significantly less time and resources. Alongside furnace optimization, the company implemented NNPB technology, reducing the weight of a bottle from 360 grams to 220 grams.

The result is Russia’s lightest glass bottle—also its highest quality. AI systems monitor the process, using machine vision to spot defects as early as the droplet formation stage, allowing instant corrections.

Company CEO Anton Mor insists: “We are already ahead of most other nations’ glass packaging industries, where simply achieving automation is still considered progress.”
