Leading experts at the Institut klinicheskoy meditsiny imeni N. V. Sklifosovskogo (Institute of Clinical Medicine) at Sechenov University have developed Russia’s first digital textbook in clinical medicine. The resource is hosted on a multimedia platform that allows authors to update content online, the institute’s press service said.

From Text to Surgical Video

Natural sciences are advancing rapidly, and medical knowledge evolves alongside them. National clinical guidelines are regularly updated, making traditional textbooks quickly outdated. The new digital format addresses this issue by enabling continuous content updates. Each topic is overseen by a профильный специалист. The textbook covers therapy, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, and oncology, and is aimed at medical students in Russia and CIS countries studying general medicine.

“Modern medical education is unthinkable without breakthrough technologies. The Institute of Clinical Medicine at Sechenov University is not just keeping pace—we are ahead of current trends. While the global medical community is only beginning to discuss the transition to digital education and specialized platforms, we have already created a unique product: a living textbook that evolves along with our understanding of medicine,” said project curator and institute director Beatrisa Volel.

Beatrisa Volel added that the institute has ambitious plans to further develop the project. The new format allows students to work with both text and extensive multimedia content, including echocardiography data, CT and MRI scans, and videos of surgical procedures. Cross-references to related topics and national guidelines provide easy navigation. Through personal accounts, students can create notes and bookmarks and track their progress. The platform also includes self-assessment materials and a database of clinical case studies.

A Textbook That Never Becomes Outdated

Sechenov University plans to expand the platform by adding foundational disciplines such as anatomy, histology, and physiology, as well as continuing education programs and patient-oriented knowledge bases.

“The team at the Institute of Clinical Medicine has developed a unique textbook that will never lose relevance: it will evolve at the same pace as global medicine,” said project lead Yulia Lutokhina.

Earlier, it was reported that Russia’s first drone textbook is set to reshape education and engineering.
