Researchers at RTU MIREA’s Institute of Advanced Technologies and Industrial Programming have developed a new assistive device for people with partial or complete vision loss. The system consists of a compact clip-on unit that can be attached to clothing. Inside are a miniature computer, a GPS module, an ultrasonic distance sensor, a camera, and an audio output.

The device functions as an intelligent scanner that continuously analyzes the surrounding environment and can even read text. Information is delivered to the user through an earpiece in the form of spoken guidance.

“We wanted to create a device that would serve as more than a cane for a blind person – a true digital assistant. One that could not only help users avoid obstacles, but also recognize friends, read signs, and navigate the city,” the developers said.

One of the device’s key advantages is its cost. The unit is priced at 11,000 rubles (about $140), and its functionality does not require any additional subscription fees.
